Off to London today for a long weekend to celebrate my 50th (this Monday). Staying at The Hoxton Hotel and going for a meal tonight at Hawksmoor Spitalfields
Angharad has OK’d my new bike (and given me £1,000 towards it!) so going to Tokyo Fixed Gear in Soho Sunday to spec out a Dream Machine.

Booked the trains for our Gremany holiday later in the year. Visiting Cologne, Berlin and Munich.
| Visiting Toronto in September with my wife. We'll be there 8 days either side of Labor Day, staying at the Drake Hotel and visiting friends up near St. Clair. We really want to get in some cycling after enjoying it so much in Copenhagen last year. I've planned an afternoon on Toronto Islands but was wondering if there are any city tours? Any suggestions? |
Just worked out how I can use my iPhone 4 in Toronto, use data and receive calls from the UK without roaming charges.
So far I’ve
I’ll use Fido’s by the minute (30¢ a minute/20¢ a text) plan for voice and their $7 for 125 MB Data Week Pass add-on for data. If this isn’t enough I can top-up with their $2 for 20 MB Data Day Pass.
To phone home I’ll use SkypeOut over Wi-Fi as I’m sure Skype will be blocked over the Fido/Rogers network. To receive calls from the UK I’ll divert my 3 Mobile number to my SkypeIn number and then to the Fido number via SkypeOut.
The call from 3 to Skype will be in my plan’s free minutes and the Skype to Fido call will be at Skype’s rates of 1.6p per minute. I’ve already got a Skype number and credits from when I was a freelance (gave out the Skype number and diverted it to my mobile, oh for Google Voice in the UK).
Now if the telecoms companies didn’t charge exorbitant rates for international roaming (£1.02 per minute UK to Canada, £2 per minute Canada to UK, £6 per MB for data) I wouldn’t have to go through all this!
Holiday booked, 8 days in Toronto at the beginning of September with Angharad. Staying at The Drake Hotel on Queen St W.
Looking forward to meeting some old friends who both married Canadian girls over in the UK and live in Toronto now. Going to do some cycling and also just bought tickets to see the Blue Jays against the Red Sox.
